Greeting Card Japanese Inspired Origami Doll
Greeting Card Japanese Inspired Origami Doll
Description : As an artist I love paper, all kinds of paper. I think that is why I love The Maker Beehive so much, because paper is such a big part of the art we create. Traveling around the world I found some of the most beautiful paper is created in Japan and that paper is used in the intricate art of origami. Shiori ningyou is a two dimensional origami paper doll. Around the 1600’s in Japan little girls began to play with dolls made of scraps of paper but as the tradition of Japanese origami grew the designs of the dolls became more and more elaborate. Traditionally, the dolls do not have any facial features allowing the owner’s imagination to change the expressions. The two dimensional type of origami dolls are call Shiori Ningyo. The cards I have created are similar to a type of doll called Shikishi Ningyo which is a paper doll mounted on a paper background. Each doll is one of a kind design and completely handmade from beautiful Japanese washi/ chiyogami paper, printed with patterns copied from Japanese Kimonos. The intricately dressed dolls are mounted on a Italian, deckle edge, heavy watercolor paper card. Each card is blank inside and comes with a gold bubble wrap envelope if you wish to send her as a gift.
